I think it is probably safe to say that the most often-overlooked item of riding gear is proper footwear. I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen riders go by me wearing a decent jacket, helmet and gloves, but with tennis shoes on their feet. And while it might be true that in higher-speed or more critical accidents, the primary impact points are your head, hands and arms, it is just as true that in lower-speed, less-critical accidents (which are considerably more common), it is your feet and ankles that will often bear the brunt of impact.
