CLEAN BIKES AND A TRIP BACK IN TIME

A Perewitz motorcycle is always meant to be ridden! When we're building our customs, we always have in the back of our minds that the bikes are meant to be ridden, and not left sitting in a garage. That being said, our bikes are gonna get dirty!

To keep a custom bike — or any bike, for that matter — looking showroom-new, we simply make it a point to wash them or wipe them down after each ride. If you take a few minutes to clean your bike after every ride, it's a lot easier to keep it clean over time.

This spring, the Perewitz crew traveled to Laughlin, Nevada, with a trailer full of customs. While we were there, Jody, the crew and I took a couple of Arizona day trips, including one to Lake Havasu, and another to Oatman. On one of the rides we got caught in a rain storm, so when we got back to the hotel we followed our own advice and made sure to wipe down the bikes.

Back to the ride: Oatman, Arizona, is a small town that sits on top of a mountain along the famed Route 66. The population of Oatman is only about 120: that's about 100 people and 20 donkeys. Yes, donkeys! The donkeys just roam the streets of town hoping tourists like us will feed them. On our visit we encountered donkeys of every age and size — and they were all really friendly! Oh, and the townspeople were friendly, too. It's not surprising if you've never heard of Oatman before, because the town truly is in the middle of nowhere, and the locals live a simple life without the need for a lot of modern technology or expensive things.

If you're ever in the Laughlin area and looking for a nice little day trip, consider riding out to Oatman — it's only about 90 miles away, and it's a very cool place to visit.

ALLSTATE BOBBER WINNER ANNOUNCED

On May 10, Tom Clarkson, North Central Region Field Vice President, announced the winner of the Allstate Motorcycle Sweepstakes. The announcement ceremony, scheduled to coincide with Motorcycle Safety Month, was also attended by the bike's legendary builder, Dave Perewitz.

The beautiful blue Allstate Bobber was won by Karen Benefield, of Pinckney, Michigan. "The 2009 Bobber toured the country last year, and was a huge hit at every show we went to," said Perewitz. Such a hit, in fact, that tens of thousands of people nationwide entered the sweepstakes for a chance to win it.

Winning came as quite a surprise to Karen, who plans to share the bike with her husband, Dennis. "It was really quite exciting to find out we won this," she said. "I didn't believe them at first, but now that it's here, it's pretty awesome." Dennis Benefield, who accompanied Karen to the announcement ceremony, has big plans for his first ride: "The first place I'll take it is to work, so I can show off a little," he said with a laugh.
